April 25: Bon Voyage to Provo

April 26, 2011 12:00 AM
The Bon Voyage Concert is over, and the choir is now finishing packing both for tour, and for many to leave Provo for the summer or post-graduation life. This entry will be very brief as the packing process is long, and morning will come early. The choir sang a good concert to a very appreciative audience (love those home audiences!) and had a chance to perform some of the pieces they've learned more recently.

April 26: Rifle, CO

April 27, 2011 12:00 AM
Today began as do all tours—piles of luggage and tour paraphernalia on the sidewalk by the BYU Museum of Art early in the morning, and then the initial puzzle solving of loading the luggage and equipment under the bus in the right order. All in all, it went very smoothly and we were off and rolling very close to on time. Snow chased us off and on all the way to Rifle, Colorado, where they are looking for spring just as hard we have been looking in Utah.

April 27: Arvada, CO

April 28, 2011 12:00 AM
Blue sky! The very need to start with that says it all. It would have been a good day anyway, after a stay with such fun, generous, gracious hosts—but the bright sky was most welcome, as we could finally see how beautiful the area is around Rifle.

April 28: Loveland, CO

April 29, 2011 12:00 AM
Day Three of our tour, and it dawned absolutely gorgeous. Such a deep blue sky! We spent several hours at the Denver LDS temple (in Centennial, actually) either in the temple or enjoying the beautiful grounds and warming weather. I'll let the photos tell the story. We then drove to Loveland, where the choir had an open rehearsal while the choirs of Loveland and Thompson Valley High Schools observed and learned.

April 29: Fort Collins, CO

April 30, 2011 12:00 AM
Our day began early, with everyone deposited by twos and threes at Rocky Mountain HS by 7:30 a.m. It takes dedicated students who love to sing to show up ready to make music at that hour, but this school has an amazing program filled with just those kinds of students.

April 30: Fort Collins to Colorado Springs, CO

May 01, 2011 12:00 AM
Our day began with a rewarding session at CSU with the Chamber Singers, Dr. James Kim (their director) and Dr. Todd Queen (see previous post). Students of both choirs quickly found many commonalities in how they approach music, and how their conductors approach conducting, teaching, and life. We had a very interesting discussion about the role of music, the values that can be taught/learned through singing in choirs, and the strong element of spirituality that pervades music and good performances of it.

May 1: Colorado Springs, CO

May 02, 2011 12:00 AM
The Sabbath has been a welcome respite after being on the run all of the last week. The choir was divided between several LDS wards, attending church meetings with their host families. Some lucky Singers were able to sleep in a little longer before church at 11, but I’m sure the ones who went at 9 managed to fit in a nap during the afternoon.

May 2: La Jara & Alamosa, CO

May 03, 2011 12:00 AM
Today began in Colorado Spring on a bright, blue day. We had another chance to see this beautiful chapel in the daytime, and could actually see the mountains surrounding this unique city as we drove out of town.

May 3: Alamosa, CO

May 04, 2011 12:00 AM
We headed out this morning to see the Great Sand Dunes, only a short drive from Alamosa. With the dunes in the forefront of the rugged Sangre de Cristo Mountains, the setting is truly stunning. After our group photo, we went our separate ways for the next 90 minutes. Some watched the film, some walked to the main dune area, and others with lots of energy raced to the top of the dunes.

May 4: Pueblo, CO

May 05, 2011 12:00 AM
We awoke today happy after last night’s concert, sad to leave such wonderful hosts, but with just a bit of anticipation at the idea of possibly warmer weather. We drove through quite a bit of snow on the ground and bare trees as we traveled a mountain pass on our way to Pueblo. And what beautiful and craggy mountain peaks, covered in deep snow!

May 5: Littleton, CO

May 06, 2011 12:00 AM
We met the bus at 8 AM and had devotional and took care of some other business while en route to Littleton. We had time to spare, so we stopped at an outlet mall in New Castle to enrich their coffers.

May 6: Cheyenne, WY

May 07, 2011 12:00 AM
On the road again – but first we drove to the beautiful Catholic church in Denver where we will be performing tomorrow night’s final concert. This was our only chance to rehearse in the space and figure out how and where to stand. I’ll put some photos of the church today, though there will be more tomorrow. It has beautiful acoustics, and the choir is looking forward to the concert.

May 7: Denver, CO

May 08, 2011 12:00 AM
Wow. What an incredible last day of tour. We bid goodbye to Cheyenne and our gracious hosts on a brilliantly blue day, and arrived at the Denver Zoo about two hours later. From there, we were on our own for almost five hours to just wander and enjoy. I’ll post a few photos just to prove we were there.
